Turkey’s youth unemployment stood at 20.7 percent in January according to official data.
Despite a growing youth jobless rate in developed markets, Turkey has managed to minimize the increase in this area, the International Labour Organization (ILO) said on Wednesday.
Releasing their report titled “Global Employment Trends for Youth 2013” on Wednesday, the ILO drew a bleak picture regarding global youth unemployment levels. The organization said the global youth unemployment rate is close to crisis peak with a figure of 12.6 percent expected by the end of 2013.
It estimated the total number of unemployed young people globally at 73 million in the same period. “In some countries with a large youth population share, the situation is far worse than the regional figures suggest,” the report continued, adding, however, that countries like Turkey benefited from a decline in youth unemployment.

“A similar positive trend was observed in Turkey where the youth unemployment rate in 2012 was 17.5 percent compared with 25.3 percent in 2009 and 20.0 percent in 2007,” the report said.
The ILO included Turkey among the Central and Southeastern Europe (non-EU) and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) group in their report.
The organization estimates the average youth unemployment rate in the non-EU and CIS group at 17.9 for 2012, adding that this rate could reach 18 percent in 2018. One critical detail in the group including Turkey is that temporary employment among youth jumped to 18.4 percent in 2011 from 9.3 percent in 2003. In further details, part-time work was 7.2 percent among youngsters in 2007, increasing steadily to 12.4 percent in 2011.
The ILO anticipates the youth employment to population ratio at 33.8 percent in these countries by 2018, a 0.7 percent decline from 2012. The average youth labor force participation rate in this group is also anticipated to decline to 41.2 percent in 2018 from 42 percent in 2012.
