If an employee has a heart attack at work, should it be considered as a work accident?
The definition of work accident and all the corresponding conditions are described in detail on Social Security and General Health Insurance Act number 5510. According to this act, work accident is defined as any incident that occurs at the workplace or during work and hurts the employee physically or mentally. A heart attack at workplace could be considered as a work accident based on this definition.
All kinds of accidents or incidents that damage the employee physically and mentally should be reported to the Social Security Institution (SSI). If the accident results in death or severe injury, the nature of incident – whether considered a work accident or not – becomes more critical. The insured employee’s close relatives will be entitled to monetary aid from the Institution if the incident is considered a work accident. In case, the employer fails to report to SSI, the institution could ask compensation for the possible damages from the employer.
